Costa Daurada beach is located in Roda de Barà municipality in the Baix Tarragonès county of Tarragona province, Catalonia. The beach is semi-enclosed with an average width of 66 metres and a total length of 770 metres, composed of medium sand. It is situated in a semi-urban residential environment, bordered by the Roda de Barà marina on one side and open to Francàs beach on the other. Summer occupancy levels are medium. The beach forms part of water mass C25 (Cubelles-Altafulla), classified as a sandy, shallow water body with low continental influence.

Mediterranean Sea water mass C25 (Cubelles-Altafulla), classified as sandy and shallow with low continental influence. Average salinity 37.3–38.6 psu. Water temperatures: June 21.5°C, July 25°C, August 25.8°C, September 24.3°C. Significant wave height 74 cm with mean period of 6 seconds, most frequent direction SSW. General circulation is cyclonic type with coastal-parallel current and northeastern current. Predominant sea state is rippled. Prevailing wind direction SW with weak intensity. High hydrological response velocity index to rainfall events.

Location

Roda de Barà, Baix Tarragonès county, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in a residential coastal zone. Additional information about the beach and facilities is available on the Roda de Barà municipal website.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring minimum 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring includes weekly analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes minimum 3 weekly inspections evaluating transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons and jellyfish presence. The beach receives wastewater from the Torredembarra treatment system, which provides biological treatment before discharge to sea via submarine outfalls.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in place since 2000. Single freshwater input (Fondo del Coca) discharges only during heavy rainfall. Seven submarine outfalls service the area, including one principal outfall and six emergency outfalls that discharge treated wastewater. Coastal zone has high hydrological response velocity to rainfall episodes.
