Platja de la Llosa is a beach in Cambrils, Tarragona, located in a residential urban environment. The beach consists of a series of small U-shaped coves delimited by breakwaters on both sides, bordered to the north by Platja d'Horta de Santa Maria and to the south by Platja del Dorado. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Beach type: enclosed cove. Average width: 32 m. Length: 600 m. Surface area: 41,174 m². Sediment: very coarse sand (D50 = 1.15 mm). Water entry slope: very steep. Coastal line evolution: 0.82 m per year. Water mass: C30 (Cambrils-Mont-roig del Camp sandy shallow type with low continental influence). Average salinity: 36.9–38.5 psu. Water temperature: June 22°C, July 25.4°C, August 26°C, September 24.9°C. Predominant wind: SE, weak. Predominant sea state: rippled. Significant wave height: 81 cm, average period: 5.24 seconds, most frequent direction: E. Continental influence level: low.

Location

Cambrils municipality (31,720 inhabitants), Tarragona province, Baix Camp comarca, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in a residential coastal area.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental control conducted over 17 consecutive weeks, with weekly microbiological analysis and minimum 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control measures Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci weekly. Environmental control includes assessment of water transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Cambrils wastewater treatment system (EDAR) provides biological treatment and discharges through a primary outfall (Riera de Riudoms at Cavet beach, 2,000 m long, 29 m deep) and four emergency outfalls.

Risks

Riera de la Mare de Déu del Camí, located approximately 500 m north, normally does not reach the sea but may discharge into Platja d'Horta de Santa Maria during heavy rainfall or anthropogenic discharge. The area is monitored for phytoplankton proliferation and other water quality issues.
