Platja de la Marquesa is an open beach located in Deltebre municipality within the Ebro Delta Natural Park in Tarragona, Catalonia. The beach is 1,200 metres long with an average width of 90 metres, composed of fine sand with a moderate water entry gradient. The beach is surrounded by agricultural land and bordered by the Gola de Pal canal to the southeast and the Fangar point entrance to the northwest. Summer occupancy is low.

Mediterranean Sea. Beach surface area: 105,698 square metres. Fine sand sediment with mean grain size (D50) of 0.2 millimetres. Coastline evolution: -6.38 metres per year. Water mass classification C33 Delta Nord: sandy, shallow type with high continental influence. Salinity range: 6.7–38.3 psu. Average water temperature: June 22.9°C, July 26°C, August 26.2°C, September 24.6°C. Predominant sea state: rippled. Significant wave height: 81 centimetres; mean period: 5.24 seconds; most frequent direction: East. Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH): Low.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring includes weekly testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes minimum three weekly inspections assessing water transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Ebro River and Estela Pond (Bassa de l'Estela) discharge through the Gola de Pal canal, which is regulated by a pumping station controlled by the irrigation community.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored through a dedicated surveillance programme. The programme detects possible harmful algal species that may pose health risks to swimmers. Hydrocarbons and other harmful substances are monitored. A management protocol is in place for detecting and informing the public of toxic phytoplankton species. Most phytoplankton blooms form only coloured patches and do not pose risk to swimmers.
