Platja de la Bassa de l'Arena is an open beach located in Deltebre municipality within the Ebro River Delta Natural Park in Tarragona, Catalonia. The beach is 3,000 metres long with an average width of 44 metres and fine sand sediment. It is situated approximately 3 kilometres from the mouth of the Ebro River and has a gentle water entry slope. Summer occupation of the beach is low.

Mediterranean Sea. Surface area 124,696 square metres. Beach type: open. Average width 44 metres. Length 3,000 metres. Fine sand sediment with median grain size (D50) of 0.21 millimetres. Gentle water entry slope. Coastal erosion rate of -6.16 metres per year. Water body classification: C33 Delta Nord, sandy shallow type with high continental influence.

Location

Deltebre municipality (11,751 inhabitants), Baix Ebre county, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. Located within the Ebro River Delta Natural Park. The Ebro River mouth is situated approximately 3 kilometres south-west of the bathing zone.

Season

1st week of June to 3rd week of September

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly during the official bathing season (1st week of June to 3rd week of September) for 17 consecutive weeks. Microbiological monitoring (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) conducted weekly. Environmental monitoring carried out minimum three times per week. Monitoring is conducted according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE on bathing water quality management. The Catalan Water Agency is the responsible monitoring body.

Risks

Low hydrological response index (VRH) in the coastal zone. No permanent freshwater discharge at the beach during dry conditions, but proximity to the Ebro River mouth (approximately 3 kilometres away) creates continental water influence. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme is in place to detect potentially toxic algae species. Jellyfish monitoring programme is conducted during the bathing season.
