Riumar Beach is an open sandy beach located in Deltebre municipality within the Ebro Delta Natural Park on the Mediterranean coast of Tarragona province, Spain. The beach stretches for 1,100 metres with an average width of 74 metres and fine sand sediment. It experiences moderate water entry gradient and moderate summer occupation. The beach is bordered by a residential area on the back and opens to a dune zone called Garxal to the right and to Arena Basin Beach on the left.

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. Beach area: 62,200 m². Average width: 74 metres. Length: 1,100 metres. Fine sand sediment with median grain size (D50) of 0.19 millimetres. Moderate water entry gradient. Coastal orientation: NNE. Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH) is low. High continental influence level. Salinity range: 1.9–38.2 practical salinity units. Water temperature averages: June 23.1°C, July 26.2°C, August 26.2°C, September 24.8°C. Predominant wind direction and intensity: SE, weak. Predominant sea state: rippled. Significant wave height: 81 centimetres, mean period 5.24 seconds, most frequent direction: E. Coastal erosion rate: −2.03 metres per year.

Location

Deltebre municipality (11,751 inhabitants) in the Baix Ebre region of Tarragona province, Catalonia. The Ebro River estuary is located approximately one kilometre to the right of the beach, with Deltebre fishing port situated within the river's final stretch.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental control during 17 consecutive weeks. Microbiological monitoring weekly on Saturdays. Environmental monitoring minimum three weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is controlled by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes minimum three weekly inspections assessing water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The bathing water mass (C33 Delta Nord) is classified as sandy shallow water with high continental influence.

Risks

The beach is subject to phytoplankton proliferation monitoring as part of the ACA's algae control programme. Jellyfish presence is monitored during the bathing season. The proximity of the Ebro River estuary and Deltebre fishing port may affect water quality.
