Platja de les Roques is a natural beach located in Calella, Barcelona, in the Maresme region of Catalonia. The beach is 736 metres long with an average width of 26 metres and covers an area of 13,605 square metres. It is bounded on the north by a natural rock formation where Calella lighthouse stands, separating it from Platja de Garbí, and on the south by the municipality of Sant Pol de Mar. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. The beach is an enclosed sandy beach with very thick sediment (median grain size D50 = 1.68 mm). Average depth and water volume are not specified. The water mass C16 (Pineda de Mar-Mataró) is classified as shallow sandy type with low continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 37.2 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.3°C, July 23.7°C, August 23.9°C, September 22.8°C. Predominant wind direction is south with weak intensity. Significant wave height averages 0.69 metres with a mean period of 6.2 seconds and most frequent direction SSW.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections are conducted a minimum of three times per week.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators measured weekly are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections include assessment of water transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is served by the Maresme Nord wastewater treatment system with biological treatment and a main submarine outfall at Platja dels Pins in Pineda de Mar, serving 69,485 residents with equivalent population of 166,666 h-e.

Risks

The beach has low continental influence but receives occasional freshwater inputs from Torrent de les Basses at its northern boundary (with continuous but minimal flow) and from Torrent de la Cabra to the south, though with minimal impact. Monitoring includes surveillance for harmful algal blooms and detection of accidental water quality incidents.
