Punta de la Tordera-de la Conca is an open beach located in Malgrat de Mar, Barcelona, in the Maresme comarca of Catalonia. The beach extends 2,500 metres in length with an average width of 69 metres and covers 27,957 square metres. It is situated in a predominantly natural setting with agricultural surroundings, though industrial use and camping facilities exist at its boundaries. The beach experiences low occupancy during summer months.

Water

Sandy beach on the Mediterranean Sea. Average grain size (D50) is 0.91 mm (coarse sediment). Water entry slope is very steep. Coastline is eroding at a rate of 3.5 metres per year. The beach is oriented SSE and belongs to water mass C15 (Blanes-Pineda de Mar), classified as a sandy shallow water body with low continental influence. Average water temperatures are 20.1°C in June, 23.5°C in July, 23.9°C in August, and 23.0°C in September. Salinity ranges from 13.8 to 38.5 psu. Predominant sea state is choppy. Significant wave height averages 0.69 metres with a mean period of 6.2 seconds and most frequent direction SSW. The area experiences weak south-easterly winds.

Location

Located in Malgrat de Mar, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bordered to the north-east by the Tordera River estuary, which separates it from Sabanell beach, and opens to Malgrat Centre beach to the south-west. The municipality has a population of 18,472 inhabitants.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) are analysed weekly. Environmental parameters monitored include water transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton spots, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The monitoring programme includes weekly microbiological analysis and a minimum of three weekly environmental inspections.

Risks

The Tordera River at the beach's north-eastern boundary is the primary source of freshwater input to the bathing zone, particularly during rainfall episodes. The area is situated in a zone with high hydrological response velocity (VRH), indicating rapid hydrological response to rainfall events. Four wastewater discharge emissaries serve the Alt Maresme sanitation system, which treats wastewater from Malgrat de Mar and neighbouring municipalities.
