Malgrat Centre is an open sandy beach located in a semi-urban setting within the municipality of Malgrat de Mar in Barcelona province, Catalonia. The beach is 900 metres long with an average width of 70 metres and a total surface area of 65,279 square metres. The beach experiences high occupancy levels during summer months. It is situated in the Maresme coastal region and belongs to the Blanes-Pineda de Mar water body classification.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water. The beach is classified as an open sandy beach with very coarse sediment (median grain size D50 = 1.81 mm). Water temperature ranges from 20.2°C in June to 23.9°C in August. Average salinity ranges from 36.8 to 38.7 psu. Significant wave height averages 0.69 metres with a mean period of 6.2 seconds. Predominant wave direction is south-south-west. The beach has a steep water entry gradient and the coastline evolves at approximately 0.4 metres per year.

Location

Malgrat de Mar municipality in the Maresme region, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded to the north-east by Punta de la Tordera beach and to the south-west by the Palafolls stream.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring is conducted for 17 consecutive weeks during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes a minimum of three weekly inspections evaluating water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton presence, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish. The beach belongs to water body C15 (Blanes-Pineda de Mar) classification as a sandy shallow water body with low continental influence.

Risks

The Palafolls stream, located at the south-west end of the beach, constitutes the main source of freshwater discharge during rainfall events. The area has a high hydrological response velocity index. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted to detect and control species that may endanger public health. Hydrocarbon presence and other harmful substances are monitored.
