Platja de Cristall is an open beach located in the highly urbanized and industrial municipality of Badalona in Barcelona, Spain. The beach stretches 960 metres in length with an average width of 33 metres and covers a surface area of 31,680 square metres. It is situated in close proximity to Badalona Port, the mouth of the Riu Besòs river, and the Sant Adrià thermal power station. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months and has a soft water entry gradient with coarse sediment.

Water

Mediterranean Sea bathing area belonging to water bodies C18 (Montgat-Badalona: sandy shallow with low continental influence) and C19 (Sant Adrià de Besòs: sandy shallow with moderate continental influence). Average salinity range 36.9–38.5 psu. Water temperatures: June 21.4°C, July 23.8°C, August 24.2°C, September 23.6°C. Significant wave height 0.74 metres with mean period of 6 seconds, most frequent direction SSW. Predominant sea state is rippled. Weak southerly winds predominate. General circulation is cyclonic with a current parallel to the continental coast.

Location

Badalona, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded to the northeast by the Velàzquez street breakwater and to the southwest by the Riera de Canyadó, which separates it from Platja dels Pescadors. Part of the Barcelonès county in the Maresme waterway basin.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring conducted for 17 consecutive weeks, with microbiological testing weekly on Saturdays and environmental inspections minimum 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control tests Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci weekly. Environmental inspections conducted minimum 3 times weekly evaluate water transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation debris, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Sand and beach access conditions are also inspected. Residual water from Badalona municipality is treated through the Besòs wastewater system with biological treatment at the EDAR Besòs treatment plant, with effluent discharged to sea via submarine outfall.

Risks

The beach is located in a hydrological response velocity (VRH) high zone. Two main freshwater sources discharge during rainfall: Torrent Vallmajor and Riera de Canyadó. The coast experiences erosion at a rate of 1.8 metres per year. The area is affected by proximity to industrial infrastructure including Badalona Port and Sant Adrià thermal power station.
