Playa de Ortigues is a natural sandy beach located in Guardamar del Segura, Alicante, in the Valencian Community. The beach has a longitudinal open configuration without coastal defence structures. It stretches 3,416.8 metres along the waterline with an average width of 37.5 metres. The beach is bordered to the north by Playa del Moncaio and to the south by Playa de Torrelamata. Water quality is monitored during the official bathing season from 1 June to 15 September.

Water

Coastal marine water body of the Segura Hydrographic Demarcation. The shoreline extends 3,416.8 metres with an average width of 37.5 metres. Sandy composition with natural origin. Microtidal range. Current direction flows from south to north. Low-accumulation coastal type.

Location

Guardamar del Segura, Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain. The beach is accessible by car with parking available. Access points are located within the municipality.

Facilities

Lifeguards and rescue services. Free public toilets and toilets in beach bars. Foot showers (lavapiés). Parking. Beach bar and chiringuito. Buoys and coastal markers. Beach umbrella and lounger rental. Waste bins and selective recycling. No accessible facilities for disabled persons.

Season

1 June to 15 September. Weekly inspections of the bathing zone occur during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified and monitored weekly during the bathing season (1 June to 15 September). Classification categories are Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient based on parameters including water appearance, sand cleanliness, and visual inspection results. No direct discharges to the coastline affect water quality. The water mass is classified as having Moderate status under the Water Framework Directive.

Risks

Low-frequency potential contamination risks from rainfall, urban sanitation, and coastal discharges, all with minor impact. Rivers and canals, industrial installations, port facilities, and diffuse pollution present low frequency and minor impact. Cyanobacteria do not occur habitually in coastal waters. Phytoplankton blooms and jellyfish proliferation are natural phenomena associated with water temperature and coastal geomorphology.
