Sant Vicenç de Montalt beach is an open sandy beach located in an urban residential environment within the municipality of Sant Vicenç de Montalt in the Maresme region of Barcelona. The beach spans 1,200 metres in length with an average width of 80 metres and a surface area of 91,914 square metres. It is bounded to the northeast by the Gorg stream and to the southwest by the Balís port. The beach experiences medium occupancy levels during summer.

Water

Open Mediterranean beach in a coastal area with high hydrological response velocity. Mean water salinity ranges from 37.0–38.3 psu. Mean water temperatures: June 20.8°C, July 24.0°C, August 24.5°C, September 23.9°C. Significant wave height 0.69 metres with mean period 6.2 seconds, most frequent direction SSW. Predominant weak southerly winds. Predominant rippled sea state. Sediment grain size D50 = 0.81 mm (coarse). Coastal evolution rate −0.8 m/year.

Location

Sant Vicenç de Montalt, Maresme region, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 5,627 inhabitants. The beach is bordered by the Gorg stream to the northeast and the Balís port to the southwest.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is weekly. Environmental control comprises a minimum of three weekly inspections over 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is controlled and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring includes Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Water body C16 Pineda de Mar–Mataró classified as sandy shallow type with low continental influence. Wastewater from the municipality is treated at the Sant Andreu Llavaneres treatment plant (biological treatment), with effluent discharged to sea via the Balís port submarine outfall (1,700 metres long at 21 metres depth, maximum capacity 7,400 m³/day). System serves 28,367 population equivalents.

Risks

Three streams (Gorg, Sant Vicenç, and Balís) provide freshwater inflows during rainfall events. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme is in place to detect harmful algal blooms. Visual inspection evaluates water transparency, colour, floating debris, marine and terrestrial plant matter, foam, phytoplankton discoloration, and hydrocarbons.
