Platja dels Tres Micos is an open sandy beach located in Caldes d'Estrac, in the Maresme county of Barcelona, Catalonia. The beach stretches 600 metres in length with an average width of 100 metres and consists of fine sand with a very steep water entry slope. The beach is situated in a residential urban environment with medium occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water mass C16 (Pineda de Mar-Mataró), shallow sandy type with low continental influence. Average salinity 37.0–38.3 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.9°C, July 24.0°C, August 24.6°C, September 24.0°C. Significant wave height 0.69 m with mean period 6.2 seconds. Predominant sea state: slight ripple. General circulation follows cyclonic type with a current parallel to the continental coast.

Location

Caldes d'Estrac, Maresme county, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded on the north by a breakwater near Hotel Colon and on the south by the Riera del Gorg waterway.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control: weekly (Saturdays). Environmental control: minimum 3 weekly inspections over 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Weekly analysis of bathing water quality. Environmental inspection includes assessment of water transparency, coloration, suspended solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant matter, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

Riera de Caldetes and Riera del Gorg constitute the main freshwater inflow to the bathing area during rainfall events. The area has high hydrological response velocity (VRH) index during heavy rainfall episodes. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted during bathing season to detect potentially toxic algal species.
