Platja de la Musclera is an open beach located in the municipality of Arenys de Mar in the Maresme comarca of Catalonia, Spain. The beach has an average width of 56 metres and a length of 630 metres, with a total surface area of 46,311 square metres. It is situated in a semi-natural setting with a south-southeast orientation and experiences high summer occupancy. The beach is bordered by the Punta del Canyadell rock formation to the northeast and the Canyadell stream to the southwest.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal waters. Average depth characteristics not specified. The water body is classified as a sandy shallow type with low continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 36.8 to 38.6 psu. Water temperature averages 23.8°C in June, 23.9°C in July, 24.5°C in August, and 24.0°C in September. Significant wave height averages 0.69 metres with a mean period of 6.2 seconds and most frequent direction from the south-southwest. The coastline is experiencing erosion at a rate of 5.3 metres per year.

Location

Arenys de Mar municipality in the Maresme comarca, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is part of the Rieres del Maresme river basin.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Control monitoring takes place over 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological analysis and minimum 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly during the bathing season according to European Directive 2006/7/CE criteria. Microbiological indicators monitored include Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental control includes weekly sampling and visual inspection of water characteristics including transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial vegetation, algal bloom patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The Canyadell stream is the primary freshwater input to the bathing zone during rainfall events. The area has a high hydrological response velocity index, indicating rapid water response to rain episodes. The beach sediment is coarse (D50 = 0.74 mm) with very steep water entry slope. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme is in place to detect and control potentially toxic algal species during the bathing season.
