Santa Margarida beach is located in the municipality of Roses in northeastern Spain, in an urban and touristic setting. The beach is semi-enclosed with a sandy substrate, measuring 602 meters long and averaging 42 meters wide, with a moderate entry gradient into the water. The beach has high summer occupation levels and is bordered to the north by the Trencada stream outlet and to the south by the Rec Madral outlet pier.

Coastal line evolution: -0.97 m per year. Average water temperatures: June 20.8°C, July 23.2°C, August 22.8°C, September 21.6°C. Average salinity range: 28.5–38.6 psu. Significant wave height: 0.61 m with mean period of 5.82 seconds, most frequent direction north. Predominant sea state: flat. Prevailing wind direction and intensity: east, weak.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified and monitored according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly (all Saturdays) during the 17-week bathing season, analyzing Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci indicators. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of 3 times weekly, evaluating water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foams, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The wastewater treatment system for Roses serves 23,237 residents with equivalent population of 100,000 h-e, providing biological treatment with nitrogen removal, discharging through a submarine outfall at Roses beach.

Risks

The beach receives freshwater input from the Bruneta stream during heavy rainfall events. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted throughout the bathing season to detect toxic species; however, most proliferations cause only colored patches in the water with no risk to swimmers.
