Platja de Roses is a semi-enclosed urban beach in Roses municipality (Alt Empordà, Catalonia, Spain) with a length of 1,300 metres and average width of 40 metres. The beach has coarse sand with a strong water entry slope and is oriented south. It is bounded to the north by a breakwater channelling the Riera dels Ginjolers and to the south by the Riera de la Trencada. Summer occupancy of the beach is high.

Mediterranean Sea. Water body code C7 (Roses-Castelló d'Empúries): sandy shallow water body with low continental influence. Beach surface area: 44,618 square metres. Average water temperature: June 20.9°C, July 23.3°C, August 23.1°C, September 21.7°C. Mean salinity range: 36.3–38.6 psu. Significant wave height: 0.61 metres with mean period of 5.82 seconds. Predominant sea state is calm. Wind direction: predominantly east, weak intensity. Hydrological Response Velocity Index: medium.

Location

Roses municipality in Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in an entirely urban setting.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring: weekly during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring: minimum three inspections weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality monitored weekly during bathing season. Microbiological control: weekly testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring: minimum three weekly inspections evaluating water transparency, colour, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Wastewater treatment: single biological treatment plant (EDAR) with nitrogen removal serves 23,237 residents (100,000 h-e equivalent). Treated wastewater discharged to sea via main submarine outfall at depth of 18 metres. Maximum discharge capacity: 25,000 cubic metres per day. Small portion receives tertiary treatment for reuse in non-potable urban uses.

Risks

Direct water inflow from Rec Fondo and Riera Trencada (both channelised) during heavy rainfall. Riera Ginjolers discharges between breakwaters at the left edge of bathing zone. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in place to detect potentially toxic algal species.
