Platja de la Punta is a 380 metres long beach situated in an entirely urban setting in the municipality of Roses, Girona, nestled between the port of Roses and a breakwater that channels the mouth of the Riera dels Ginjolers. The beach has an average width of 57 metres and covers an area of 23,651 square metres with fine sand sediment. Summer occupancy levels are moderate.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body mass C7 (Roses-Castelló d'Empúries), classified as a sandy shallow water type with high continental influence. Average salinity 36.6–38.7 psu. Water temperature June 21.1°C, July 23.4°C, August 23.2°C, September 21.8°C. Significant wave height 0.61 metres with mean period 5.82 seconds. Predominant wave direction north. Water entry gradient moderate.

Location

Located in the municipality of Roses (19,463 inhabitants) in the Alt Empordà comarca of Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated between the Roses port and a breakwater at the mouth of the Riera dels Ginjolers.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly from June to September according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Classification is determined by microbiological analysis of faecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Temporary quality classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing) or Insufficient (unsuitable for bathing). Annual classifications after four years of data use categories of Excellent, Good, Sufficient or Insufficient.

Risks

The beach receives no direct discharge from natural water courses, although two streams (Riera de la Cuana and Riera de Ginjolers) discharge at the beach extremities during rain events. These streams are channelized and discharge between breakwaters. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring has been conducted since 2000; these proliferations are natural phenomena caused by massive growth of microscopic algae and in most cases pose no risk to swimmers. Precautionary warnings are issued in cases of temporary water quality impacts during rainfall episodes or occasional wastewater system incidents.
