Tamariua beach is a cove-type bathing area located in El Port de la Selva municipality in Alt Empordà comarca, Catalonia. The beach is protected from open sea by the bay in which it is situated and is set in a semi-natural and residential environment representing the boundary of Cap de Creus Natural Park. The beach has high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Cove-type beach with average width of 22 m and length of 78 m. Surface area of 1,918 m². Very steep water entry gradient. Water depth at main outfall: 42 m. Salinity range 35.7–38.6 psu. Average water temperatures: June 20.0°C, July 22.1°C, August 21.6°C, September 20.2°C. Predominant state: calm. Significant wave height 0.61 m with average period 5.82 seconds. General circulation is cyclonic with currents parallel to coast and north-eastward flow. Low continental influence.

Location

El Port de la Selva municipality, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in a protected bay at the northern edge of Cap de Creus Natural Park.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring minimum 3 inspections per week.

Water Quality

Monitoring conducted by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA). Water classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored weekly during swimming season: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Treated wastewater from Port de la Selva treatment plant with biological and tertiary treatment is discharged either to Riera de Romanyac (October–May) or directly to sea via submarine outfall (June–September).

Risks

Occasional stream inflow (Rec de la Tamariua) during heavy rainfall. Monitoring program for phytoplankton blooms in place; such blooms are natural phenomena and typically form colored patches without risk to swimmers.
