Platja del Callao is a semi-enclosed sandy beach located in the urban municipality of Mataró in the Maresme region of Barcelona, Catalonia. The beach has an average width of 80 metres, a length of 403 metres, and a surface area of 31,851 square metres. It experiences high occupancy levels during summer months and is bounded by the Riera de Sant Simó to the northeast and a breakwater to the southwest. The beach has a steep water entry slope and is oriented south-southeast.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing area belongs to the C16 Pineda de Mar-Mataró water mass, which is a sandy shallow water body with low continental influence. Mean water temperature ranges from 20.8°C in June to 24.5°C in August. Salinity ranges from 37.1 to 38.4 psu. Significant wave height averages 0.69 metres with a mean period of 6.2 seconds. The hydrological response velocity index is high.

Location

Mataró, Maresme region, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated within the urban area of Mataró, which had a population of 121,722 at the time of profiling.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental control is conducted over 17 consecutive weeks during this period.

Water Quality

Monitoring conducted by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) follows EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control is performed weekly, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections occur at least three times weekly, evaluating water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Riera de Valldeix is the principal source of freshwater input during rainfall events.

Risks

The Riera de Valldeix (or Riera de Sant Simó) is the main source of freshwater discharge into the bathing area during rainfall. The area is subject to monitoring for phytoplankton proliferation. Environmental inspections assess the presence of hydrocarbons and other harmful substances.
