Platja de Ponent is a sandy beach located in the urban municipality of Mataró in the Maresme comarca of Catalonia, Spain. The beach measures 100 metres in length with an average width of 21 metres and covers an area of 4,129 square metres. It is bounded by breakwaters at both its northeast and southwest extremities, separating it from the Mataró port zone and a rocky area respectively. The beach experiences high occupancy levels during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing water belongs to the C16 Pineda de Mar-Mataró water mass, classified as a sandy, shallow coastal type with low continental influence. Mean water temperature ranges from 21.1°C in June to 24.9°C in August. Mean salinity ranges from 37.5 to 38.4 psu. Significant wave height averages 0.69 metres with a mean period of 6.2 seconds and the most frequent direction is SSW. The water entry slope is very steep. Continental hydrological response velocity is classified as high.

Location

Mataró, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in an urban environment within the municipality of Mataró, which has a population of 121,722 inhabitants. Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental control occurs during 17 consecutive weeks, with weekly microbiological sampling on Saturdays and a minimum of three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes a minimum of three weekly inspections assessing water transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Mataró municipality also performs regular sanitary quality controls using an approved laboratory following the same directive criteria.

Risks

The bathing water may be subject to phytoplankton proliferations, which are monitored continuously during the bathing season by the ACA under its phytoplankton control and monitoring programme, which has operated since 2000. Monitoring also includes detection of hydrocarbons and other harmful substances.
