Platja del Varador is an urban beach located in Mataró, Barcelona, within the municipality of approximately 121,722 inhabitants. The beach is 780 metres long with an average width of 105 metres and covers an area of 91,116 square metres. It is bounded by a breakwater to the northeast separating it from Platja del Callao, and by Mataró port to the southwest separating it from Platja de Ponent. The beach experiences high occupancy levels during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water mass C16 Pineda de Mar-Mataró, classified as sandy shallow water with low continental influence. Average salinity 36.1–38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.7°C, July 23.8°C, August 24.5°C, September 24.0°C. Significant wave height 0.69 metres with mean period 6.2 seconds. Predominant sea state is rippled with weak southerly winds. Coastal current circulation is cyclonic with currents parallel to the coast and a northeast-directed current offshore.

Location

Mataró, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Located on the Mediterranean coast within the Maresme region. The beach is situated in an urban environment and is bordered by a breakwater to the northeast and Mataró port to the southwest.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring includes minimum three inspections per week.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly during the bathing season, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections are conducted at least three times weekly, evaluating water transparency, colouration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. No natural freshwater courses discharge near the bathing zone under normal rainfall conditions.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored and controlled as part of the coastal surveillance programme. The ACA operates an aerial surveillance and cleaning vessel programme to detect and prevent potential water quality impacts from both human and natural sources.
