Platja del Moll Grec is a sandy beach located in the municipality of L'Escala in Alt Empordà, Catalonia, Spain, near the Sant Martí d'Empúries archaeological site. The beach is 432 metres long with an average width of 38 metres and a very steep water entry slope. It is bounded to the north by the Punta de Sant Martí pier and to the south by the Greek pier fragment and Muscleres beach. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water bodies C8 (St Pere Pescador-Fluvià, sandy shallow type with high continental influence) and C9 (L'Escala, rocky deep type with moderate continental influence). Average salinity 35.9–38.4 psu. Average water temperatures: June 20.5°C, July 22.9°C, August 22.8°C, September 21.4°C. Predominant sea state is calm. Average wave height 0.61 metres with a mean period of 5.82 seconds and most frequent direction from the north. The beach does not receive any natural water courses, permanent or temporary.

Located in Sant Martí d'Empúries, L'Escala, Alt Empordà, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. Situated near the famous archaeological complex of Sant Martí d'Empúries.

First week of June to third week of September.

Water Quality

Water quality is controlled by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly (every Saturday) during the 17-week bathing season for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes a minimum of 3 weekly inspections assessing water parameters including transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The area is subject to phytoplankton proliferation monitoring as part of the ACA's program to detect and control harmful algal blooms that could pose health risks. Macroalgae communities are also monitored.
