Platja del Far de Sant Cristòfol is a sandy beach located in the semi-urban municipality of Vilanova i la Geltrú in Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 655 meters long with an average width of 99 meters and a surface area of 64,845 square meters. It is bounded to the north by a cliff (Punta Mabrera) and to the south by the Torrent de la Piera and the Port of Vilanova i la Geltrú. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water body classified as C24 Vilanova i la Geltrú (sandy shallow water with low continental influence). Average water temperature ranges from 22.1°C in June to 26.0°C in August. Average salinity is 37.1–38.5 psu. Significant wave height is 0.74 meters with a mean period of 6 seconds. The beach has a moderate water entry gradient and fine sand sediment (D50 = 0.16 mm). Coastal erosion occurs at a rate of 1.6 meters per year.

Location

Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona Province, in the Garraf comarca of Catalonia. The beach is situated in a semi-urban (residential) environment within the municipality of Vilanova i la Geltrú, which has approximately 65,890 inhabitants.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring is conducted weekly (every Saturday) during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring is performed a minimum of three times per week.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly during the bathing season according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections are conducted a minimum of three times weekly, evaluating water transparency, coloration, floating debris, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The Torrent de la Pastera provides occasional freshwater discharge during rainfall conditions. A wastewater treatment system (EDAR) with a principal submarine outfall (emissari) is located at the southern end of the beach, near the Torrent de la Piera. The beach is in a high hydrological response velocity (VRH) zone, making it susceptible to runoff during heavy rain events. Phytoplankton proliferations can occur seasonally.
