Ribes-roges Beach is an urban beach located in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona, Spain. It is a 1,080 meters long beach with an average width of 170 meters, covering a surface area of 106,920 square meters. The beach has fine sand with an average grain size of 0.15 mm and a moderate water entry gradient. It experiences high occupancy during summer months and is bounded by Vilanova Port to the north and a T-shaped breakwater to the south.

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. Average width 170 meters, total length 1,080 meters, surface area 106,920 square meters. Average salinity 36.6–38.4 psu. Water temperature: June 22.3°C, July 25.6°C, August 26.1°C, September 24.9°C. Significant wave height 0.74 meters, average period 6 seconds, predominant direction SSW. Low continental influence. Predominant sea state: rippled. Predominant wind direction SW, weak intensity.

Location

Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona, Spain, within the Garraf region. The beach is located in an urban setting with proximity to Vilanova i la Geltrú Port.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks, with weekly microbiological sampling on Saturdays and a minimum of 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Monitoring is conducted weekly during the bathing season. Environmental inspections assess water transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation residues, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Wastewater from the municipality is treated by a biological treatment plant (EDAR) with secondary treatment and discharged to sea through a submarine outfall.

Risks

Riera de Sant Joan constitutes the only freshwater input that occasionally discharges near the bathing zone during rainfall conditions. The area is subject to monitoring for phytoplankton blooms, which are natural phenomena that can occur frequently at beaches during summer. Algal blooms are typically monitored and managed through established protocols.
