Platja d'Adarró is a sandy beach located in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona, within a semi-urban environment. The beach is 655 metres long with an average width of 99 metres and a surface area of 64,845 square metres. It features fine sand and a moderate slope for water entry. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months and is bounded by breakwaters at both northern and southern ends.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water mass C24 (sandy type with low continental influence). Average salinity 37.1–38.6 psu. Surface area 64,845 square metres. Average water temperature: June 22.4°C, July 25.7°C, August 26.0°C, September 24.9°C. Significant wave height 0.74 metres with mean period of 6 seconds. Hydrological response velocity index is high.

Location

Vilanova i la Geltrú municipality, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is in the Garraf region. It is bordered by the Ribes-roges beach to the north and Sant Gervasi beach to the south.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly for 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring includes a minimum of three weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) Beach and Coastal Water Quality Surveillance Plan in accordance with EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) are tested weekly. Environmental inspections occur at least three times weekly, assessing water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

A natural watercourse reaches the beach only occasionally during heavy rainfall conditions. Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored and tracked as they are a natural phenomenon that may occur frequently during summer. Monitoring protocols exist for detection of toxic species.
