Playa del Morrongo is a maritime bathing zone located in Benicarló, Castellón province, Valencia. It is a closed cove-configuration beach with perpendicular rock breakwaters and a rigid maritime promenade. The beach has a high-accumulation low-coast type with sand composition and current flow from south to north. Water quality classification shows excellent results across the 2020–2023 monitoring seasons.

Maritime bathing zone. Shoreline length 262.2 m. Average width 40.5 m. Sand composition. Micromareal tidal range. Current direction south to north. Low-accumulation coast type. Belongs to the Júcar hydrographic demarcation with coastal water mass category.

Location

Benicarló, Castellón province, Valencia. The beach is bounded by the Benicarló port zone to the north and Playa del Gurugú to the south. Parking is available. Disabled access is provided.

1 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent. The coastal water mass has very good status. Annual precipitation in the influence zone is 325 mm, with April as the wettest month and July as the driest. No direct discharges affect the beach. Urban wastewater system discharges via a submarine outfall (2,163 m long, 560 mm diameter, constructed 1991) into the sea away from the bathing zone.

Risks

Potential short-duration contamination factors identified with low frequency and mild impact: rainfall, urban wastewater systems, coastal discharges. Other low-frequency, mild-impact factors: rivers/channels, industrial installations, port facilities, diffuse pollution. No cyanobacteria proliferation detected on the Valencia coast. Jellyfish and phytoplankton proliferation are natural phenomena that may occur.
