Platja dels Muntanyans is an open beach located in Torredembarra, Tarragona, within the natural area of Salats-Muntanyans, a dune zone with wetlands. The beach is 2,200 metres long with an average width of 66 metres, covered with fine sand. It has a moderate water entry gradient and a south-easterly orientation. The beach experiences medium occupancy during summer.

Mediterranean Sea. Water body classification: C25 Cubelles-Altafulla, sandy shallow type with low continental influence. Beach surface area: 141,214 square metres. Average salinity: 32.8–38.8 psu. Water temperature: June 21.5°C, July 25.1°C, August 25.8°C, September 24.5°C. Significant wave height: 74 cm; average period 6 seconds; most frequent direction SSW. Predominant sea state: rippled. Predominant winds: SW, weak.

Location

Located in Torredembarra, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, within the Salats-Muntanyans natural area. The beach is situated between Creixell beach to the left and Barri Marítim beach to the right, with the Rasa stream and Maritime Club located nearby.

Season

Official monitoring season: June to September.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored bi-weekly from June to September by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) in accordance with Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring analyzes faecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci. Quality is classified as Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient based on analytical results from the past four years.

Risks

The beach is located in a low-lying area with a high hydrological response velocity index. The Mas Mercader stream reaches the wetland area but does not reach the sea even during heavy rainfall. One emergency outfall (Emissari Clarà Mar) from the Torredembarra wastewater treatment system is located at this beach, with capacity to discharge 22,104 cubic metres per day.
