Platja de la Paella is a wide semi-enclosed beach located in the urban area of Torredembarra, a municipality in Tarragona province, Catalonia. The beach is bounded by the Torredembarra port breakwater on the right and opens to Barri Marítim beach on the left. It has an average width of 108 metres, stretches for 790 metres in length, and experiences high summer occupancy. The beach is situated in the Mediterranean Sea with a southeast orientation and moderate water entry gradient.

Mediterranean Sea. The beach belongs to water body C25 (Cubelles-Altafulla), classified as sandy shallow water with low continental influence. Average beach surface area: 88,230 square metres. Fine sand sediment with mean grain size D50 of 0.23 mm. Coastal line evolution: 1.51 metres per year. Salinity range: 33.7–38.6 practical salinity units. Average water temperatures: June 21.6°C, July 25.1°C, August 25.8°C, September 24.5°C. Significant wave height: 74 centimetres, with mean period of 6 seconds. Prevailing sea state: rippled. General circulation follows the Catalan Sea cyclonic pattern with currents parallel to the continental coast and currents toward the northeast.

Torredembarra, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has a population of 15,460 inhabitants. The beach is located on the Mediterranean coast.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) during the bathing season from June to September. Monitoring includes analysis of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococcus) at fortnightly intervals. Quality classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing) or Insufficient (not suitable for bathing). Annual classifications are determined using analytical data from the preceding four years.

Risks

The beach area has a High Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH), indicating rapid water response to rainfall episodes. Emergency outfalls from the Torredembarra wastewater treatment system can be activated in cases of sanitation failures. One emergency outfall (Emissari Martineta) is located at Platja de la Paella with a length of 560 metres and depth of 10 metres.
