Playa El Duque is a coastal bathing zone located in Adeje, Tenerife, Spain. The beach spans 420 metres in length and 65 metres in width with golden sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave conditions with tidal range of 1–3 metres. The bathing zone is characterised by natural coastal surface waters in good ecological status.

Coastal marine water body. Depth range 0 to −4 metres. Golden sand substrate. Wave exposure is exposed-protected. Wave regime is calm waters. Tidal range 1–3 metres. Natural coastal surface water type.

Location

Adeje municipality, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The locality is Fañabé. Pedestrian access is good. Road access is good. Parking is available and good quality. Disabled access is good.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on evaluation of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci indicators over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The underlying water body ES70TFTV_1 (Montaña Pelada – Barranco Seco) is in good ecological status. Microbiological contamination episodes occurred in March 2013, July 2013, and February 2018, all of short duration.

Risks

Point pollution sources identified: Hotel Bahía del Duque (EDAM) and Hotel Gran Tacande (EDAM). Barranco del Agua and Barranco de Fañabé watercourses. Stormwater discharge from strong rainfall runoff carrying potential contaminants. Brine discharge (EDAM rejection). Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
