Playa Fañabé is a coastal bathing beach located in Adeje, Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 622 metres long and 24.88 metres wide, with sand substrate and water depths ranging from 0 to -4 metres. The beach experiences exposed to semi-protected wave conditions with a tidal range of 1 to 3 metres. The official bathing season runs from 1 February to 30 November.

Location

Playa Fañabé is located in the municipality of Adeje on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has good pedestrian and vehicle access, a promenade, and good parking facilities.

Facilities

Lifeguards on duty. Showers, foot-washing facilities, toilets, changing rooms, and bars available. Disabled access (good). Public telephone and waste bins present. Megaphone system not available. Umbrella and lounger rental available. Canoe and kayak activities permitted. Medical attention available but no resident doctor.

Water Quality

Water quality is assessed based on faecal pollution indicators Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci measured over four years according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. The underlying coastal water body ES70TFTV_1 is in good ecological status with overall state of good or better. A microbiological contamination episode of short duration occurred on 22–24 January 2018.

Risks

Multiple potential contamination sources identified: Puerto Colón sports harbour (diffuse source); four point sources including Torviscas EBAR overflow, two hotel wastewater treatment systems, and a yacht club pool discharge; and Fañabé ravine. Possible short-duration contamination from stormwater runoff during heavy rain, raw or treated urban wastewater from sewer breaks or overflows, brine discharge from desalination, accidental hydrocarbon spills, and saline discharge from pool draining. Cyanobacteria blooms (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
