El Cristo is a natural Mediterranean coastal bathing water located in Estepona, Málaga, characterized by shallow waters with sandy substrate and moderate wave exposure. The beach spans 1,480 metres in length with an average width of 25 metres and features dark sand. Swimming conditions are generally tranquil, with shallow bathymetry and a micromareal tidal range of 0–2 metres.

Water

Mediterranean coastal waters influenced by Atlantic waters. Shallow waters with sandy substrate. Average tidal range 0–2 metres (micromareal). Current regime dominates towards the northeast. Wave regime is predominantly from the east and east-southeast, associated with Levante wind. Moderately exposed to wave action. Annual precipitation 400–600 mm.

Location

Estepona, Málaga, Andalucía, Spain. Access is available on foot and by car. The beach is in a semi-urbanized area with high occupancy.

Facilities

Red Cross post, lifeguard equipment, surveillance equipment, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, nautical equipment rental. Warning signage present. Disabled access not available. Toilets not available. No boardwalks.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent for seasons 2013–2016. Short-duration contamination risk is low and microbiological in nature, lasting up to 24 hours. Diffuse pollution sources include land use in the influence zone, constructed and altered surfaces. Rivers Ayo. Guadalobón and Ayo de Janacino are present in the area.

Low risk of jellyfish proliferation. Low risk of phytoplankton proliferation. Low risk of macroalgae proliferation.
