Playa de Estaño is a coastal bathing beach located on the periphery of Gijón in Asturias, Spain. The beach is 300 metres long with a width of 17 metres and features a composition of gravel and golden sand. It is a natural maritime zone within the Western Cantabrian water district and is included within the Natural Monument of Ichnite Deposits. Water quality at Playa de Estaño has been classified as excellent for bathing in recent years.

Coastal maritime water body. Length: 300 metres. Width: 17 metres, highly variable. Composition: gravel and golden sand. Water renewal time: less than 7 days. Average wind speed: 5.24 m/s. Current direction: west-northwest. Wave conditions: strong. Tidal range: macro-tidal (greater than 4 metres).

Location

Playa de Estaño is situated in La Providencia, on the periphery of Gijón, Asturias, Spain. Parking is available with fewer than 50 spaces. Pedestrian access is good and road access is available.

Facilities

Lifeguard services. Showers. Disabled access. Good pedestrian access.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Sanitary quality analysis at monitoring point PM1 shows excellent results. Risk of short-duration contamination episodes is null. The beach presents very low contamination risk overall.

Risks

Urban submarine outfall located 3.985 kilometres from the monitoring point. In September 2016, a contamination episode occurred due to outfall breakage, resulting in beach closure. Risk of macroalgae proliferation is low. Risk of jellyfish proliferation is low. The area is not prone to microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation.
