Playa de Serín is a coastal bathing beach located on the periphery of Gijón in Asturias, Spain. The beach is 610 metres long with a width of 25 metres and features a natural composition of rocks and golden sand. Water quality has been classified as excellent for bathing in recent years, with very low contamination risk. The beach is included within the Natural Monument of Ichnite Deposits and a designated conservation zone.

Coastal water body with a length of 610 metres and variable width of 25 metres. Macrotidal regime with tidal amplitude exceeding 4 metres. Substrate composition is rocks and golden sand. Water renewal time is less than 7 days. Average wind speed is 5.24 m/s with northwest-west current direction. Wave conditions are moderate. Occupancy level is low and urbanisation is isolated.

Location

Located on the periphery of Gijón, Asturias, Spain. Good pedestrian access is available. The bathing zone is identified as La Providencia in the municipality of Gijón.

Facilities

Lifeguard service (salvamento) is available. Good pedestrian access.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent. Microbiological analysis at sampling point PM1 shows excellent sanitary quality. The beach presents no significant contamination sources except for an urban submarine outfall located 3.1 kilometres away at sufficient distance to limit its influence. Risk of short-duration contamination episodes is null.

Risks

An urban submarine outfall from Gijón Este pretreatment station is located 3.121 kilometres away. Risk of contamination from this source is classified as null. Historical records show only two jellyfish incidents: one Portuguese man o' war specimen in July 2008 and three specimens sighted in August 2010. The area is not prone to microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low and associated with natural phenomena linked to storms. Jellyfish proliferation risk is low, with sparse incidents historically recorded.
