Playa La Garita is a coastal bathing beach in Telde, Gran Canaria, measuring 260 metres long and 85 metres wide with fine dark sand substrate. The beach is exposed to strong waves and has a tidal range of 1–3 metres. It is suitable for water activities including bodyboarding and surfing, as well as beach football. The official bathing season runs from 1 February to 30 November.

Water

Coastal maritime water body with bathymetry ranging from 0 to –14 metres depth. The water mass is classified as ES70GCTIV2 - Costera Este (East Coast), a natural surface coastal type. The beach is exposed to strong wave action with strong wave regime.

Location

Located in La Garita, municipality of Telde, Las Palmas Province, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has good pedestrian and vehicle access, a seafront promenade, and parking available (rated as poor). A public water source is available but the water is not suitable for consumption.

Lifeguards present. Showers available. Public water source available (not for consumption). Foot-washing facilities. Services available. Bars present. Waste containers. Disabled access available (rated as poor). Medical care available. No public telephone, megaphone system, umbrella rental, or sun shade rental.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on microbiological evaluation of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus intestinalis indicators assessed over a four-year period according to RD1341/2007. The water body is in good ecological status (biological and physical-chemical). Short-duration microbiological contamination episodes occurred in 2011, 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2021, typically lasting less than 72 hours.

Risks

Five point pollution sources identified: EBAR Garita I relief outlet, EBAR Garita III submarine outfall, EBAR Playa del Hombre I relief outlet, EBAR Playa del Hombre II relief outlet, and Hoya del Pozo (EDAR Hoyo del Pozo) submarine outfall. Short-duration microbiological contamination expected from stormwater runoff during heavy rainfall and from raw or treated urban wastewater and industrial discharges (pipe breaks, sewer network failures, emergency overflows, unauthorised discharges). Episodes of Trichodesmium cyanobacteria proliferation recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
