Playa Hoya del Pozo is a 130-metre-long coastal bathing beach located in Telde, Gran Canaria. The beach features dark sand substrate and is exposed to strong wave conditions with a depth range of 0 to 9 metres. The official bathing season runs from 1 June to 30 September. The beach permits activities including bodyboarding, surfing, handball, and trampolines.

Coastal water body classified as ES70GCTIV2 - East Coast/natural coastal surface. Water depth ranges from 0 to 9 metres. Substrate is dark sand. Wave regime is strong with wave exposure. Tidal range is 1–3 metres. Strong current regime present.

Location

Located in Hoyo del Pozo, municipality of Telde, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian and vehicle access are both good. A maritime promenade is present. Parking is available (good condition). Disabled access is available (regular condition).

Water Quality

Water quality is evaluated based on faecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) monitored over four years in accordance with Royal Decree 1341/2007. Monitoring period: 1 June to 30 September 2021. A microbiological contamination event occurred on 3–4 July 2017 with short duration. The underlying water mass is in good ecological status.

Risks

Diffuse pollution sources: fishing port and sports port at Club Náutico de Taliarte. Point pollution sources: two stormwater relief valves (EBAR Playa del Hombre I and II), submarine outfall for Hoyo del Pozo wastewater treatment plant, marine aquaculture, submarine outfall EBAR Garita III, and stormwater relief valve EBAR Garita I. Watercourse: Barranco Hoya del Pozo. Expected contamination events include stormwater runoff from heavy rainfall, raw or treated urban wastewater (pipe breaks, sewer network failures, overflow/emergency discharges, unauthorised dumping), and accidental hydrocarbon or organic waste spills. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017.
