Playa El Hombre is a coastal bathing beach located in Telde, Gran Canaria, Spain. The beach measures 270 meters in length and 65 meters in width, with fine dark sand substrate. It is exposed to strong wave conditions and experiences strong wave regimes typical of the eastern coast. The beach is suitable for water sports including bodyboarding, kitesurfing, and surfing, as well as beach activities such as football and volleyball.

Water

Coastal marine water body classified as ES70GCTIV2 (Coastal East/natural surface). Bathing zone dimensions are 270 meters long and 65 meters wide. Water depth ranges from 0 to 14 meters. Substrate consists of fine dark sand. Tidal range is 1–3 meters. Strong wave regime and exposure to heavy swell characterize the water body.

Location

Located in Melenara, Telde municipality, Las Palmas province, Gran Canaria, Spain. The beach has good pedestrian and vehicular access via a seafront promenade. No parking facilities are available at the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on monitoring of faecal indicator bacteria Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The underlying water mass ES70GCTIV2 (Coastal East) maintains good ecological status (biological and physico-chemical) with an overall good or better state according to the Gran Canaria Hydrological Plan. A microbiological contamination episode occurred from 26 October to 3 November 2015 due to torrential rainfall, resulting in beach closure from 23 October to 13 November 2015.

Risks

Six identified point-source pollution foci: Hoya del Pozo wastewater treatment plant (EDAR), two overflow relief structures (aliviaderos) at Playa del Hombre I and II, Hoya del Pozo submarine outfall (emisario submarino), marine aquaculture (cultivos marinos), and Banco Español de Algas facility. Bco. de La Hoya del Pozo watercourse contributes diffuse inputs. Short-duration contamination risks from stormwater runoff due to heavy rainfall (sporadic, under 72 hours expected duration) and from raw or treated urban wastewater (unexpected, under 72 hours) and biological discharge from marine aquaculture (unexpected, under 48 hours). Trichodesmium cyanobacteria proliferation episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
