Grandes Playas is a 1,600 meter long coastal bathing beach located in Corralejo, Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has a width of 50 to 100 meters with fine golden sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate waves with a tidal range of 1 to 3 meters. The water body is classified as a natural coastal surface water mass with good ecological status.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) measured over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The underlying coastal water mass is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical). No previous contamination episodes recorded in the monitoring system.

Risks

Two point sources of contamination identified: wastewater discharge from Hotel RIU Oliva Beach and wastewater discharge from Hotel RIU Palace Tres Islas. Jellyfish/sea urchins: no risk. Macroalgae: no risk. Phytoplankton proliferation episodes occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. Cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) episode recorded on 11 November 2019.
