Playa El Pozo – El Viejo (Grandes Playas I) is a coastal bathing area located in La Oliva municipality on the island of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach stretches for 2,150 metres with a width of 50–60 metres and features fine golden sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave conditions with tidal ranges of 1–3 metres. The water depth ranges from 0 to –6 metres.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on evaluation of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) collected over four years according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. The coastal water body ES70FVTI2 - Punta Jandía – Punta del Lago is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical). Two point pollution sources identified: discharge from Hotel RIU Oliva Beach wastewater treatment plant and discharge from Hotel RIU Palace Tres Islas wastewater treatment plant.

Risks

Possible short-duration contamination episodes from raw or treated urban wastewater (pipe breakages, sewage network failures, overflow or emergency situations, unauthorised discharges). Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
