Playa La Azohía is a natural beach in Cartagena located in the coastal maritime zone of the Segura hydrographic demarcation in the Mediterranean Sea. The beach is 700 metres long with an average width of 18 metres and features golden sand and rock/gravel composition. It is a semi-urban beach with medium occupancy levels and serves local recreational users, with an estimated maximum of 5,544 bathers.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal zone. 700 metres long, 18 metres average width. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Microtidal range (less than 2 metres). Golden sand bottom with rock and gravel composition.

Location

Cartagena, Spain. Coordinates: UTM 661859.77 X, 4158521.54 Y (Zone 30 N); Latitude 37.557657°, Longitude -1.168732°. The beach has a promenade.

Foot washing station (1), toilets (1). No showers or changing rooms.

Water Quality

Water quality was rated as excellent from 2000 to 2009. Water quality continued to be rated as excellent in 2010 and 2011. The water body is located in the coastal mass 'Punta de La Azohía-Puntas de Calnegre', which has good ecological status.

Risks

Toxic phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that rarely affects public health or ecosystems. Sampling in 2008 and 2009 showed practically no presence of potentially toxic cells throughout the bathing season, with risk assessed as null or very low. Jellyfish appear seasonally, with peak abundance from early spring to late summer, with highly variable production.
