El Puntal is a bathing zone located in Santander, Cantabria, situated in the Cantabrian Sea. Water quality at this bathing spot is consistently excellent, with classifications of excellent recorded for 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Water

Maritime coastal water body in the Cantabrian Sea. The beach is 4,500 metres long with an average width of 120 metres. Chlorophyll a concentration in the Santander coastal water station is approximately 2.5 µg/l.

Location

Located in Santander, Cantabria, in the municipality of Ribamontán al Mar. Parking is available. The nearest hospital is Valdecilla, approximately 20 kilometres from the beach.

Lifeguards present. Toilets available. Showers not available. Disabled access available. Blue flag status not held. Warning signage present. Cleaning service available. Pedestrian walkways for access available. Police presence available. Red Cross post present. No water sports rentals listed. No beach umbrellas or loungers for rent.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent for the years 2015, 2016, and 2017. Chlorophyll a concentration is inferior to 5 µg/l in the Bay of Santander. Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries is homogeneous with very low densities below 5,000,000 cells/l. Contamination risk is classified as low (green zone).

Risks

Isolated episodes of bacteriological contamination may occur in the interior zone due to discharge from the Suesa wastewater treatment plant. However, current sanitation systems in all municipalities discharging urban wastewater to the Bay of Santander do not pose a risk to El Puntal beach.
