Playa El Médano - Chica is a maritime coastal bathing area located in Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife, Canary Islands. The beach is 15 meters long and 20 meters wide with dark sand substrate. It is exposed to wave action but experiences calm waters. The bathing area is situated in a natural coastal surface water body classified in good ecological status.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to RD 1341/2007. The underlying coastal water mass is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical).

Risks

Two point pollution sources identified: EBAR Los Balos and El Médano submarine outfall. Two watercourses: Barranco Los Balos and Barranquillo La Barca. Short-duration microbiological contamination episodes occurred on 10-12 March 2014 and 14-16 September 2020. Expected pollution sources include stormwater discharge from heavy rainfall and raw or treated urban wastewater from outfall breaks, sewerage network failures, or unauthorized discharges, typically lasting less than 72 hours. Sporadic or unforeseen occurrence. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
