Playa El Médano is a 130-metre-long, 30-metre-wide coastal bathing beach located in Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife, Spain. The beach features golden sand substrate and is exposed to moderate wave conditions with a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The bathing zone is classified as a natural coastal water body in good or better ecological status. The beach has experienced sporadic episodes of short-duration microbiological contamination, primarily from stormwater runoff and occasional urban wastewater discharge.

Location

Playa El Médano is located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has good pedestrian access, vehicular access, a boardwalk, and good disabled access. Parking is available and is of good quality.

Facilities

Showers, foot washing stations, public services, sanitary attention, lifeguards, bins, public telephone, megaphone system, bars (notification status not reported), umbrella and lounger rental (notification status not reported), tent rental (not available). No changing rooms. No public drinking water. No doctor on site.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on evaluation of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci indicators over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The surface coastal water body ES70TFTV_1 (Montaña Pelada–Barranco Seco) is in good ecological status. Microbiological contamination episodes occurred in June 2017, January 2019, September 2020, and August–November 2021, all of short duration.

Risks

Identified contamination sources: EBAR Los Balos restaurant and El Médano submarine outfall. Watercourses: Barranco Los Balos and Barranquillo La Barca. Sporadic short-duration microbiological contamination from stormwater runoff during heavy rainfall and occasional raw or treated urban wastewater discharge (due to outfall ruptures, sewage network failures, or emergency discharges). Cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and intensely in 2017). No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
