Playa El Médano – Leocadio Machado is a coastal bathing beach located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona on the island of Tenerife, Spain. The beach stretches 600 metres in length with a width of 35 metres and features dark sand substrate. It is exposed to wave action with calm waters and a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The beach is classified as a natural coastal water body.

Located in El Médano, municipality of Granadilla de Abona, island of Tenerife, Spain. Parking is available. Pedestrian and vehicular access are available with regular conditions. A promenade is present.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) evaluated over four years according to RD 1341/2007. A microbiological contamination episode of short duration occurred in September 2017. The underlying water mass is in good ecological status with good or better overall state according to the Tenerife Hydrological Plan.

Risks

Two point sources of contamination: EBAR Los Balos and the El Médano submarine outfall. Two watercourses: Barranco Los Balos and Barranquillo La Barca. Short-duration contamination episodes may occur from stormwater runoff carrying contaminants from upstream areas and from raw or treated urban wastewater (outfall breaks, sewerage network failures, emergencies, unauthorised discharges). Episodes of cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
