Pozo Negro is a coastal bathing beach located on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 310 meters long and 12 meters wide, with dark sand and boulder substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave conditions with tidal ranges of 1–3 meters and water depths ranging from 0 to 7 meters. The beach experiences an episodic contamination risk from rainwater runoff and occasional urban wastewater discharges.

Location

Pozo Negro, municipality of Antigua, island of Fuerteventura, Las Palmas province, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian access is available and easy; vehicle access is also available. No parking facilities are provided at the beach.

Bars available. Bins provided. Pedestrian access: yes, easy. Vehicle access: yes. No public water fountain, showers, foot wash, changing rooms, lifeguards, medical care, doctors, public telephone, public address system, umbrella rental, canopy rental, or sun lounger rental.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on monitoring of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci over four years in accordance with RD 1341/2007. The water body is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical) with an overall state of good or better. Cyanobacteria blooms (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source: camping and accommodation facilities. Episodic microbiological contamination occurred on 24–25 September 2012, lasting less than 72 hours. Rainwater discharge from heavy rainfall and stormwater runoff may carry contaminants from upstream. Urban wastewater, including raw or treated sewage from broken pipes, damaged sanitation networks, emergency overflows, and unauthorized discharges, may occur sporadically for less than 72 hours. Cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium) blooms documented in the water body.
