Playa La Tejita is a 1,000-meter-long coastal beach located in Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach features dark sand substrate and is exposed to moderate wave action with a tidal range of 1–3 meters. The bathing zone has a width of 75 meters and depths ranging from 0 to 8 meters below the surface.

Water

Coastal marine water body classified as natural superficial coastal type. Water mass ES70TFTV_1 (Montaña Pelada – Barranco Seco) and ES70TF003 (Coastal Mass South-facing Slope). Bathymetry ranges from 0 to −8 meters. Substrate consists of dark sand. Moderate wave regime and exposed wave exposure.

Location

Playa La Tejita is situated in Granadilla de Abona municipality on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Pedestrian access to the beach is available but in poor condition. Vehicular access is not available. Parking is available but in regular condition.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Parking available (regular condition). Parasol and lounger rental available. Rubbish bins present. First aid services available. No public water supply. No showers. No foot-washing facilities. No changing rooms. No bars. No public telephone. No megaphone. No beach promenade. No disabled access.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci as fecal contamination indicators according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. The surface coastal water mass is in good ecological state (biological and physicochemical). No previous contamination episodes are recorded.

Risks

Episodic cyanobacteria proliferation events of Trichodesmium recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. Potential short-duration contamination from rainfall runoff carrying contaminants from upstream sources. Risk of untreated or treated urban wastewater from submarine outfall ruptures, sewer network failures, overflow events, or unauthorized discharges. Point pollution sources include EBAR Los Balos, submarine outfall El Médano, EBAR overflow Los Abrigos, and submarine outfall Los Abrigos. Three watercourses present risk: Barranco de La Piedra Viva, Barranco Los Bastianes, and Barranco del Tapao. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
