Toranda beach in Niembro is a 300 metre long, natural sandy beach in Llanes, Asturias, on the Cantabrian coast. The beach features golden sand and experiences macrotidal conditions with strong wave action. Water renewal occurs within seven days. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status and maintains excellent water quality for bathing.

Water

Coastal water body, 300 metres long and 100 metres wide (highly variable). Golden sand composition. Macrotidal range exceeding 4 metres. Average wind speed 5.24 m/s from west-northwest. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Strong wave action.

Location

Located in Niembro, Llanes municipality, Asturias, Spain. Good pedestrian access and road access with parking for over 100 vehicles.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for bathing. Awarded Blue Flag status in 2007. Microbiological monitoring at sampling point PM1 shows consistent excellent sanitary quality. Overall contamination risk is low.

Risks

Occasional contamination risk from the Ría de Barro estuary 463 metres away, which receives industrial discharges and runoff from surrounding agricultural areas; risk classified as low with effects lasting less than 8 hours. Moderate risk of jellyfish proliferation, including Portuguese man o'war and other species, with historical closures occurring during spring and summer months. Rare microalgae and cyanobacteria blooms, with one incident recorded on 29 July 2017. Low risk of macroalgae proliferation due to sandy substrate and beach orientation.
