Praia Velha is an extensive sandy beach located on the exposed mesotidal Atlantic coast in a region with a temperate Mediterranean climate. The beach is surrounded by a stunning landscape of dunes covered with vegetation. It is popular with windsurfing enthusiasts.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09 as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012. No short-term pollution episodes occurred during the bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include diffuse faecal contamination from surface fresh water from an affluent brook, solid waste from beach activities, oceanic waste, bird colonies, and high user numbers. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is less likely. Phytoplankton proliferation is likely.
