Water

The Duero River, a large river system. Environmental flow rate: 17.67 m³/s. Average flow rate: 111.4 m³/s. Four-year return period flow: 994 m³/s. The water body is classified as heavily modified. The riverbed substrate is detrital sedimentary material composed of silts and sands. Altitude: 645 meters.

Location

Located east of the urban center of Zamora, Spain. Access is via the Los Poetas bridge or the stone bridge on Carrascal road. Parking is available on-site.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified as insufficient for 2020, 2021, and 2022. Monitoring data from 2023 showed variable results with very high microbiological contaminant values recorded on September 4, 2023. Point sources include authorized discharges from Villaralbo (6.8 km upstream) and several smaller municipalities. Diffuse pollution sources include extensive livestock farming (3,288 cattle, 13,839 sheep and goats, 8,528 pigs) and agricultural runoff in the area.

Risks

Microbiological contamination from fecal sources. Health risk episodes possible when water flow falls below 15.3 m³/s and intestinal enterococci concentrations exceed 1,000 UFC/100ml. Potential sources include accidental or illegal discharges, dead animals, organic waste, and sediment remobilization. Aquatic bird populations permanently inhabit this river section.
