The Río Guadiela bathing area is located in Albendea, in the province of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. The bathing zone is situated on a natural river with a bed composed of aquatic plants, coarse sands, gravels, and rounded stones. The surrounding area is well-conserved and characterized by riverside vegetation including ash trees, poplars, and various willow species, alongside dense pine forests. Water

Río Guadiela river. The water surface mass code is ES030MSPF0133010, extending from Río Alcantud to Río Escabas. The river bed is composed of aquatic plants, coarse sands, gravels, and rounded stones. Mean monthly discharge rates during bathing season (June-September) range from 5.513 m³/s to 2.43 m³/s (1945-2016 period). The river's altitude at the bathing site is 747 meters.

Location

The bathing area is in Albendea, Cuenca Province, Castilla-La Mancha. From Priego, take the CM-2018 road towards Alcantud for approximately 6.5 km, then turn left onto an unpaved track. Continue on this track for less than 2 km, taking right turns at all junctions, until reaching the bathing zone. The access road is in poor condition and four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended. Parking is available.

Facilities

Parking available. Recreation area present. No lifeguard posts, toilets, showers, information signs, snack bar, rest areas, trash cans, boat ramp, containers, fountains, or swimming pools. Pet access status not available.

Season

1 June to 25 September. The health authority publishes the annual bathing season on nayadeciudadano.sanidad.gob.es.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring was conducted between 2016 and 2020. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations were measured in colony-forming units per 100 ml during the bathing season. The nearby monitoring station Albendea 2 – Guadiela (TACU563001) is located 7,500 meters downstream of the bathing zone.

Risks

Self-contamination by bathers identified as a significant short-term risk. Livestock in the surrounding area includes 297.9 ovine units, 6.3 caprine units, 2.4 equine units, 0.9 porcine units, and 182,749 poultry units in the municipality of Priego. Accidental or illegal discharges, dead animals, organic waste, and sediment resuspension are possible contamination sources.
