Latvia Lake 1 - Excellent

Šūņu Lake is a bathing water body in Latvia monitored according to EU Directive 2006/7/EK requirements. Water quality is assessed based on microbiological criteria including E. coli and intestinal enterococci levels, as well as observations of cyanobacterial blooms. The bathing water profile was developed to analyze factors affecting water quality and to recommend management measures to achieve at least sufficient water quality classification.

Season

Monitoring conducted during the bathing season; assessment based on four consecutive bathing seasons of data.

Water Quality

Water quality classification uses a four-level scale: excellent quality, good quality, sufficient quality, and poor quality. Quality is assessed based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli levels measured in colony-forming units per 100 ml. Excellent quality: enterococci ≤200 CFU/100 ml, E. coli ≤500 CFU/100 ml (95th percentile). Good quality: enterococci ≤400 CFU/100 ml, E. coli ≤1000 CFU/100 ml (95th percentile). Sufficient quality: enterococci ≤330 CFU/100 ml, E. coli ≤900 CFU/100 ml (90th percentile). Bathing is not recommended if E. coli exceeds 2000 but does not exceed 3000 CFU/100 ml, or if enterococci exceed 300 but do not exceed 500 CFU/100 ml. Bathing is prohibited if E. coli exceeds 3000 CFU/100 ml or enterococci exceed 500 CFU/100 ml.

Risks

Excessive cyanobacterial blooms prohibit bathing. Fecal pollution from discharge is a concern. Eutrophication and cyanobacterial bloom development potential are assessed.
