San Martino is a private sandy beach with a rocky zone located at the margins of a port area in central Sanremo. The beach is situated in a heavily urbanized coastal context in the Liguria region. Private bathing establishments operate on the beach with dining and catering services. A municipal park, cycling path, and main road are located inland from the beach.

Location

Sanremo, Imperia Province, Liguria Region, Italy. Located in the eastern part of the city of Sanremo, bordering a port area to the west. The beach area extends 0.880 km.

Facilities

Private bathing establishments with associated services and catering facilities. Municipal San Martino Park and cycling path are located inland.

Water Quality

Classification for 2020–2023 period: Poor. Monitoring frequency is intensified for the 2024 season because the bathing water belongs to the poor class. A sewer pipe located approximately 70 metres east of the monitoring point discharges offshore. Pollution sources include urban context, port-related contamination from the San Martino tourist marina, and potential discharge from the Rio San Martino and Vale d'Olivi streams during heavy precipitation events.

Sewer discharge located east of the monitoring point. Potential transport of wastewater downstream from the Rio San Martino and Vale d'Olivi streams during heavy rainfall and upstream flooding. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been recorded in the region; at the reference station in Santo Stefano al Mare, values between 10,000–30,000 cells per litre were recorded in August 2019 and July 2022. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals.
